Pandemic Teaching Options and Considerations
Introduction:
The onslaught of Covide-19 has forced the educational world to take a seat, analyze, and assume the best model practice based on Covid-19 positive rates in a certain area. This has become the new norm. Districts are troubled with finding the “best fit” educational delivery model along with implementing tools needed for maximized student achievement. Educators are being forced to instruct in uncomfortable models along with having to deal with uncontrollable components that students and even themselves may face. This module gives a glimpse of guidelines districts around the U.S. utilize to make decisions on teaching models used during Covid-19, a breakdown of three key learning models that most districts are choosing from, and key components that all stakeholders must consider.
Participant Learning Outcomes
- After the completion of this module participants will be able to understand the guidelines set by districts utilized to choose educational models of instruction.
- After the completion of this model participants will be able to explain the framework of face to face instruction (brick and mortar).
- After the completion of this module participants will be able to explain the framework of 100% online instruction.
- After the completion of this module participants will be able to explain the framework of the hybrid learning model.
- After the completion of this module participants will be able to explain and understand the digital divide and who is effected.
- After the completion of this module participants will be able to explain social and emotional learning and how it involves many stakeholders.
Learning Objectives
- What are the guidelines set by districts to help choose educational models to utilize?
- Districts have created strict guidelines that they follow to aid in deciding which educational model of instruction is best fit considering the amount of Covid-19 positive rate cases in that area.
- What is the framework of traditional face to face instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic?
- 100% face to face instruction is utilized in some districts during the pandemic. Students are in the school building 5 days a week. There are still precautions that are taking place with the students while in the school house.
- What is the framework of 100% online instruction (asynchronous)?
- Online instruction has been rapidly becoming popular since the start of Covid-19. All instruction and assessments are done via computer. Students who have never been in online courses now find themselves submerged in.
- What is the framework of hybrid learning?
- Hybrid learning also is a key controller and a highly sought out instructional model. This incorporates face to face instruction with online activities. Hybrid learning can be broken down into different elements.
- What is the digital divide?
- The digital divide is the inequality in internet and technology access. This issue was present before the pandemic, but now could widen greatly leaving some students and districts further behind.
- What is Social and Emotional Learning?
- Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to how children and adults understand/manage emotions, set/achieve goals, fell/show empathy to others, establish/maintain relationships, and make responsible decision. With the pandemic present SEL must be a focus and implemented throughout school. Students, teachers, parents, etc have all been exposed to a new world (Coved-19) and it effects everyone’s social and emotional state.
Assessment Plan
- Participants will be asked to create an infographic depicting each learning object.
- Participants will be asked to give their opinion on teaching during the pandemic (would you be able to strive if you had to teach using the hybrid or online model) .
- Participants will answer questions that have been incorporated within the module for each learning objective.
